everyones going to say the art they practice. when will people realize its more about the artist than the art. theres like a billion questions titled "best martial art" and what not.

P.S. The only difference between 'Kung fu' and 'Gung Fu' is Mandarin and Cantonese (Bruce Lee pronounced it Gung Fu). And the only differences between: Jiu-Jitsu; Ju-Jitsu, or Ju-Jutsu is the spelling, they're all the same thing.

Complete systems are the best type of martial arts.

Any complete system of martial art contains: Kata; weapons training & weapons defense; multiple attack defense training; sparring; tournament; and some degree of full contact fighting (plus philosophy, ethics, and physical fitness, etc. etc.).

Some examples of complete systems of self-defense include: Aikido, Jiu-Jitsu, Karate, Kung fu. Notice I did not include Judo or Tae Kwon Do. Kodokan Judo & Tae Kwon Do are not complete systems because, for some reason, they lack multiple attack defense training and weapons training respectively.

Avoid the prize fighting or sport fighting styles unless fighting for money in a open controlled artificial environment is your goal. So leave MMA or BJJ or Muy Thai or Western Boxing alone unless, again, you want to prize fight.

There is no best type. That's like asking what flavor pizza is best. It all depends on what you like. I'm partial to karate, but have learned stuff from Taekwondo and kung fu systems as well.

For the record, there are many different karate and kung fu systems. Tai Chi, in fact, is sometimes considered a type of kung fu, because kung fu is a term that has been applied to all Chinese martial arts. But anyway, while systems of kung fu and karate may be similar in some ways, they can be so different-looking that you would think that they weren't related. Which is true, in many cases.

Go out, see if you can try a free class or week of classes, then see which one you like the most.

That depends on a lot of variables...one of them being the one you like the best.

Kung Fu (also, Gung Fu) has hundreds of styles, all of which are classed as "Gung Fu"...
Karate is generally described as an "Open Hand" Martial Art, or weaponless...and in the West, is generally a catch-all phrase for most martial arts
Tae Kwan Do is a Korean Martial Art, and depending on who you ask, is older and more effective than most of the other Arts currently practiced.
Tai Chi has evolved more into an exercise routine, and is the martial art practiced by the largest number of people in the world. Estimates have placed the number of practitioners into the neighbourhood of 2.5 billion.

As for the "Best" Martial Art...there is none, per-se.

If you're planning on taking marial arts, and have no plan to use it in competition or for self defence...start with Tai Chi (breath control, precision, ballance, and "centering" yourself). And then choose one later for self defence.

Good Luck!

I take Shotokan Karate, and I'd recommend it to anyone. It's great with self defense and really fun. :)
