regular training for 2 months (that’s about 2 hrs a day) can get you a green belt. that’s the begining. If u continue practising regularly for 1.5 to 2 years then you may get a black belt. beyond green belt, it all depends on a person’s determination. training in karate can be difficult and you need will-power to learn it.
It all depends on what your trying to accomplish. to learn a little self defense or to make it a part of your life.A little self defense about 3 to 5 years depending on how hard you work at it or for life. Which it becomes spiritual as much as physical.
It doesn’t take much time to learn karate, but to be worthwhile to you when you need it, you have to practice it regularly. Without regular use, what you learned will quickly fade to the point of becoming useless. (or worse if you’re out of practice and try to perform a technique improperly)
There are only a limited number of ways/directions in which a person can physically attack you.
If you only want to learn basic self defense. You will need perhaps a few months of training, 2-3 sessions a week with a good teacher. I stress good here, not just a highly ranked black belt. Some superb practitioners make terrible instructors.
That should be enough to learn about a dozen solid techniques. If you stop learning there, but continue to train consistently with only those techniques, you should be quite fine in most situations.
If you want to go further and learn all the nuances of the style and train for every situation imaginable, well, that takes a lifetime.
My own experience of dabbling in half a dozen styles these past 25 years.
Karate? Hmmm….Well I became absorbed into it for about 5 years in Okinawan Isshinryu and achieved the San Kyu or Third Degree Brown Belt. It is a hard style or closed fist style mainly and I will tell you I got the crap beat of me or took some beatings and this was done to demonstrate how tough it can be in a fight. But don’t let this scare you because it depends on the style and the instructor. In my personal opinion if you just spar, and do forms and compete and gain ranks without learning to take and give hard knocks, your not getting your moneys worth because you won’t be prepared to defend yourself but just have a fancy belt to show your friends. Study hard for at least 5 years !
P.S. I forgot. I have seen a man in our form achieve 8th Degree Master Status in around 20 years of commitment.

I believed that you are always learning, and there so many types to choose from. It also depends on how determined you are to always do your best, and always trust the advice of your chosen karate instructor. They will help will you figure out a proper time schedule, and other helpful details. GOOD LUCK !

There is no set time table for leaning any type of Karate. I began my Karate studies in 1967 and have been doing it for 39 years. I am still learning things. The average time from white belt to black belt is 3-5 years. But becoming a black belt only means that you are an expert in the basics. There are several aspects of karate to consider when using the term learn. Some of these aspects are kata, self defence, bunkai, tuite, teaching, one steps, and of course fighting. All of these areas will utilize your slills learned in basics such as stances, kicking, punching, blocking, and distancing. These are only the basic areas of the question you asked. The best way to find out how long it will take you is to seek a good reputable school and begin training.
Karate or any other martial art is a lifestyle. Don’t put a time limit on how long you are going to train. It is about continual progression. And don’t get into achieving belt colors, i’ve seen lower ranking belts and untrained steet fighters take down black belts.
Karate is on going. Even black belts continue to learn.
I myself invested 2 1/2 years in American Kenpo Karate and got to green belt (2 belts below black belt). I was into the point where everything is full contact. I only stopped becuase I got pregnant.
There are ‘mc donald’ karates out there where you can get a black belt in a very short amount of time (less than a year), but I wouldn’t trust those. You’ll get lulled into thinking you know a lot when you really don’t.
Couldn’t find an average length of time, but this site is pretty cool:

many people who rise to the fifth degree or higher black belt take about 20 years, but you can take shortcuts sometimes.
