Why does everyone say TKD is acrobatic and only focuses on useless aerial kicks?
1 – Do you realize that demos are flashy just to attract new people? Would you sit through a demo where people only punched and kicked at the air, belt high or lower, and never did anything ‘flashy’?
2 – Aerial kicks are a part of the curriculum, but they are not the focus. In TKD there are 6 ways to apply a kick – and ‘aerial’ encompasses only one of those ways. At that, aerial kicks may not be as effective as another type of kick, but I can guarantee that they are effective.
Don’t get me wrong, there are bad schools out there. Please stop saying that all bad schools belong to TKD. ALL martial arts have their bad apples.
Um, you can’t take the UFC as a ‘real’ proving ground, because they don’t ptractice one style. In the old UFC, before the martial arts got mixed, TKD and Karate usually won their matches quickly. It wasn’t until the Gracies became popular that TKD/Karate started losing ground…
