The following schools are available to us in our area.
Shiva Goju-Ryu Karate
Shotokan karate
American fighting arts
Taekwondo (traditional and american)
He is very interested in taking classes, I am interested in the physical fitness, discilpine, self image, self defence.
Can anyone tell me the basic differences in the styles and maybe some advice as to which i might choose?
I forgot Aikido…although i have talked to them and it is mainly an adult school.
thank you for the answers these are the schools I have to choose from, we cannot travel to another school. Can anyone describe these forms, give me some info before i visit them, thank you.
I’m not sure about the american fighting arts but they have Karate type trophies in the display window…so i don’t think they are wrestling…
edit: after talking to the American fighting arts, it is a tkd and mixed martial arts school.
Thank you Sibling, you are the only one who broke things down, like i asked, but you dont seem to think any are worth it. I personally visited the Aikido school and i can tell you it looks like they are the most physically challenging of the group, there warm up was 20 minutes long and included falls and tumbling that i don’t know if i could do for 20 minutes. And i guess another point is that I believe a good martial arts training can help a child with self esteem and discipline, note that my son does not need this as he is a good kid. I think anything that requires hard work and attaining goals helps with self esteem and discipline.
i only have one school near me that teaches some form of self defence and thats taekwondo. the man is a 7th dan blackbelt and i went to my first class a few days ago. i was surprised at how hard he worked beginners. towards the end of the class he taught us two self defence moves if we were being attacked from behind (the attacker grabbing you from the neck behind). he showed us two effective moves to escape the situation including what you would do if you were being dragged backwards at the same time. this is the only kind of class like this near me until the city and it is conveniently located as well a s fun to attend, while still building my confidence and strength. is it good for self defence in a real life situation?
thanks
