i have an interesting question.
What would be the “simplest” martial art for a small, light person, with slow reflexes to learn and pick up in a short time?
I dont mean become a master.
I mean something straightforward. With straight-forward techniques.
Without being specifically oriented to combat such as wrestling or kick-boxing or regular boxing.
Rather something that can be used for self-defence if necessary but without requiring hours of hard drilling.
I’ve considered wing chun as a possibility but surely there are others.
I know one chinese art works entirely on using the palm of the hand to both block and strike. This is effectively the only blocking and striking tool for the particular art.
any ideas on alternatives?
NOT karate or Taekwondo as these tend to be forms oriented therefore take a long time.
thanks for the answers guys.
however, not after “magic tricks” as I’m aware there are none.
However am after something practical.
To define a short time.
A short time doesnt mean a few lessons as opposed to a few months.
Like say 6 months as opposed to 6 to 10 years.
The point here is to seek a style that is seriously practical without being a “training for the ring” style.
Boxing can take years to master however one can learn to throw a punch properly in a short time.
This wont make a person a ring boxer but it can give someone an edge in certain situations.
By doing some bag drills they can learn what it feels like to hit a target. They can be taught to do so without braking fingers in the process.
By comparison there are a number of arts where a person will spend 3 years in a horse stance punching empty air before learning how to use the punch in a real scenario.
Nothing against forms as long as they are practical from day 1 not just aesthetically pleasing.
after all a lot of tai-chi is graceful, peaceful, and pretty but it would never be street practical.
Whereas I have read of krav maga.
And from what I read it is practical from day 1 although it takes years to master.
My temperament is if its not practical from day one why bother?
However if its practical from the outset then its worth years of study.
