alan watts’s writings have helped me out tremendously with an existential crisis i suffered through. i felt free and invigorated after reading: “The Way of Zen.” i continued on to read the chuang tzu and the records of linji which have helped me out even further. but, recently i joined in on a discussion of taoism in some group and they were saying that alan watts was stupid, that you’ve got to practice tai-chi a lot in order to gain wu-wei (wu-wei meaning unforced action – so these people are basically saying you need to force yourself to stop forcing yourself). i haven’t heard of anyone criticizing alan watts before. i think that he was a very logical man – he used logic to explain the illogical. should i just not listen to these taoists, who strike me as new age hippies and corrupted by modern taoists, or is there something really wrong with what alan watts’s writings?
Am I a babbling brook?
I like to meditate on my inner being, my motives, my actions. It makes me wise. I become wiser with seeking the counsel of others. There are those who’s opinion on this site I admire and look for their comment. You know who you are. This quote came to my attention this morning after my meditation. Now I am asking for wise counsel.
Listen to the sound of water. Listen to the water running through chasms and rocks. It is the minor streams that make a loud noise; the great waters flow silently.
The hollow resounds and the full is still. Foolishness is like a half-filled pot; the wise man is a lake full of water.
-Sutta Nipata
Thanking you in advance!
