How do you know when God is telling you not to do something or to let a dream/interest go?

I don’t mean sins that are clearly covered in the Bible. In this case, I mean taking karate. How do I know God wants me to pursue it? Before you say, “Um, why would God care if you take Karate?! That’s the dumbest thing I’ve ever read,” I believe God has a certain plan for each of us…a certain life partner, job, place to live, friends, dream to fulfill. If you keep meeting (seemingly insurmountable) frustrations, could that be God saying, “Don’t do this”?

I’m particularly interested in a Christian perspective. Thanks.
I am saved, sanctified and delivered.

Best,

G
Maybe I should clarify, it’s not about karate, per se, but about how do you know when God is trying to tell you something and what that something is? Sometimes God’s will is very clear. Other times not.

When will the arm pain end?

I went to my first day of Taekwondo. Everything went okay, until we had to practice what we learned with a partner. My partner was one of the trainers, a fit 30+ year old man. We had to practice some of the standard kicks, and I held the pads while he kicked. I don’t know if he knew but he was kicking really hard and the pads weren’t good at absorbing the shock, my arms were. Well, I told him but he lightened up a bit. I think by then the damage was already done. Immediately after the class, my arms were very weak, especially my right arm, so much so that it was a bit difficult to drive. Now a week later, the weakness has left, but I can’t hold my right arm up for long (no longer than 10 minutes) when I’m talking on the phone or something until it starts hurting. I’m hoping that this will pass. I just want to know was any long-lasting damage done? Will I regain endurance in my right arm?
