Tai chi -Hurting people without touching them?

When I was younger I used to go Tai Chi, I progressed to the stage where I was doing push hands but gave it up because I couldn’t afford it any more. When i was there we would occasionally see th master fending off people/holding them down/throwing them into mats without touching them? The victim’s movements always seemed a bit farcical, but they would fly back onto mats with real force though. I was never given the chance to experience this for myself though. Is this for real though? Was it psychological? Can any tai chi instructors comment?
