My Fiance has a temper! What should I do to help him?

My fiance gets REALLY mad about the littlest things. He has even put his hands on me before. I am looking into some counciling and things but I need help in the meantime. I need to find a solution to help him calm down. Meditation, some calm activity or something. He gets mad more times than he is happy. He used to be in the Navy….u think that has something to do with it? I also looked into some anger management classes.
