help in picking out a good form of martial arts for my 11 y/o son.?

The following schools are available to us in our area.

Shiva Goju-Ryu Karate
Shotokan karate
American fighting arts
Taekwondo (traditional and american)

He is very interested in taking classes, I am interested in the physical fitness, discilpine, self image, self defence.

Can anyone tell me the basic differences in the styles and maybe some advice as to which i might choose?
I forgot Aikido…although i have talked to them and it is mainly an adult school.
thank you for the answers these are the schools I have to choose from, we cannot travel to another school. Can anyone describe these forms, give me some info before i visit them, thank you.
I’m not sure about the american fighting arts but they have Karate type trophies in the display window…so i don’t think they are wrestling…
edit: after talking to the American fighting arts, it is a tkd and mixed martial arts school.

Thank you Sibling, you are the only one who broke things down, like i asked, but you dont seem to think any are worth it. I personally visited the Aikido school and i can tell you it looks like they are the most physically challenging of the group, there warm up was 20 minutes long and included falls and tumbling that i don’t know if i could do for 20 minutes. And i guess another point is that I believe a good martial arts training can help a child with self esteem and discipline, note that my son does not need this as he is a good kid. I think anything that requires hard work and attaining goals helps with self esteem and discipline.

I think my friend’s 10 year old son broke his big toe, read the story for more details and to enter your input

My friend just got her kids back out of foster care in Jan 06, the kids were ages 8 and 10. Well, the kids were taken for “dirty house” issues. My friend has cleaned her house and is doing great! Well, the other day while she was napping, the 10 year old was playing with the 8 year old in the middle of the den. According to the 10 year old, he was gonna karate kick his 8 year old bro, the 8 year old drawed up his knee to his stomach, like a crouching position in self defense, (to block the kick) well the older boys foot hit the knee and they heard a small pop, and the older boy went crying to his mom. she felt it was broke and had her neighbor (a veteran 22 year R.N) to look at it. She thought it was broke too, but said that they don’t usually put cast on, the only thing a doc could do is make a diagnosis and administer pain medicine. My friend is scared to take the boy to the hospital because of past dealings with Child Protective Services, they just left her alone. What can she do?!!
The boy is able to walk on it and isn’t in any big pain as long as he doesn’t put too much pressure on his toe. he has been going to school and is doing good.

Are there any taekwondo schools in or near Jackson,Ms that teach the tae geuk forms.?

Husband will be relocating there and I am trying to find a dojang that uses the same forms that we are currently practicing. My son will test for his black belt in March and I would like for him to continue in the same style he is used to.

Yes, enroll him or no way?

My son wants to begin taking karate/aikido classes but he always gets bored of the activities he asks to get signed up for. He can never seem to stick with whatever we enroll him in for more than 2 weeks. Anyways he tells me that this time is different and that he will stick with it, but the place that I am going to enroll him in is expensive and there is no refund policy. Should I tell him no way?
I like hearing different people’s suggestions so feel free to comment. Thanks.

What age should my husband and I tell my son that my husband is not his biological father?

My husband and I recently decided to tell my son that my husband isn’t his biological father… but we really don’t have a good idea as to when to tell him.. My son is 6 and very mature for his age. We want to do what is best for him and think it is best that we are honest and tell him. How old should he be?? And how do you tell him??
My son and his biological father are in taekwondo and just recently “met” each other for the first time (he introduced himself as an instructor, nothing else) at a tournament…and are mostly likely going to run into each other at future tournaments…so what do we do?? This is such a sticky situation. Please help!
