Martial art to learn with my dad?
Hi I’m looking to learn a martial art with my dad, we are going to take classes but I’m having trouble deciding which.
He has some back problems, so he wanted to do tai chi. I realize that every move you learn in tai chi has a fighting application, but do they teach you the fighting application eventually?
I want to do it for the fighting purposes, but I don’t want to push my dad.
Taekwondo seemed a little extreme from videos I watched on Youtube, does it start out slower?
Kung Fu seemed like a good choice. What do you guys suggest?
I meant teach the fighting application in a faster way, not the just the fluid slow movements.
And if it matters, I’m 16 (female) and he’s 42.
My son has been taking TaeKwonDo for a while now. He enjoys it, but we’ve hit a snag…can some help?
As far as learning form and technique, he’s having no trouble at all. He can remember forms, different stances and movements. He enjoys sparring, and can’t wait to get to class every day. He eagerly puts on his sparring gear, walks up proudly to face his opponent in these little practices they have…then it happens…
He gets kicked in the stomach, or in the face, or in the side because he isn’t quite aggressive enough. He’s very passive, and seems to lack self confidence. Once the realization comes that he got hit (painful or not) he starts crying and begins cowering away from his opponent.
The teacher addresses this, naturally by telling him to stop crying and fight back…hard! He reminds him that if he’s attacked on the street by someone who wants to beat him senseless and take his wallet, that his attacker will not care if he starts crying, nor take pity on him.
My son is eleven, and he’s so ashamed of his frequent crying . Any advice to help him stop when he gets kicked?
Please help me advise my teeage son (Serious answers only)?
I have a son that is 15 and he is a “good” kid he is an honors student and has never had trouble with authorities, the problem is that he is terrified to defend himself in any pyhsical situation. We have been through black eyes, a broken tooth, stitches, a broken collar bone and now the latest thing, he was recently hit in the back of the head with a metal pipe while walking home from school. I have offered to home school my son and he doesn’t want to do that (he’s affraid he won’t get into a good college) I have also offered to pay for karate classes which he has declined also. I have been putting in applications in smaller towns (we live in a big city) with no response yet. I work in the E.R. of a busy hopital and I see young people come in frequently that have tried to committ suicide and my fear is that one day that will be my child. Please give me any advise you think would help him, there must be parents or children out there that know what this like….Thank You!
Alot of people asking, ANSWER-His father was killed in a car wreck when he was five. I never remarried, I put myself through college (prior to this I was a stay at home mom) and have concentrated on raising my son
I am not a nurse, but I am a specialist of sorts woking with transplant/trauma patients, unfortunately there’s just not a great demand in smaller towns and hospitals for what I am trained to do.
Meditation?
I cannot meditate. The trouble is I do not know what to focus on. I am told the breathe but I feel uncomfortable with this. Can anyone suggest what to concentrate on. Or any decent websites? Many thanks
Having a bit of trouble choosing a martial art….someone who knows about them please give me some advice :)?
Hey, i know that a lot of people ask this question here but i wanted to pick a martial art that fits perfectly to my wants.
Ok, i want a martial art that is very good when it comes to self defence(quick moves and grapples)mainly to disable the attacker and disengage out of combat. I do not mind if it includes slow moves or tactics. oh i would also want one that is very precise and teaches you a fair amount about the human anatomy and where to strike etc….
Ive been looking around a bit and seem to be interested in:
Leopard kung fu
tai chi
ninjutsu
ju jutsu
and hapkido
Please guys tell me what u guys think would be best for me and dont just stick to whatever one you do.
Thanks ![]()
Oh and i also want something that would improve agility and reaction times as i progress with the art.
