  4. Yes, yes, yes… all of the above. Find a class suitable for beginners… you want a basic hatha yoga class that emphasizes a lot of pranayama (breathing exercises) and some meditation techniques. Try two or three different teachers before you pay to commit to a whole series of classes… teaching style and experience can make all the difference in the world. Like with any new exercise, you start by learning the proper form so you don’t injure yourself, but after about 2-3 months good form will become habit and then the real benefits start kicking in. After six months or so you can start working up to more demanding styles… Iyengar (the form nazis!), Ashtanga (also called “power” or “flow” yoga for its endurance factor), or Vinyasa. Save the Bikram and Kundalini classes until you are pretty advanced level… if you start there you will never return to class!

Also ready, study, watch videos to learn different nuances and more of the spiritual side of the practice. When yoga becomes a part of your life, it is a powerful survival skill and a path to peace and contentment. Go for it.

  5. Aim yourself for the classes that teach vinyasa — the movements between poses — rather than just poses. Having to keep your focus on your breathing and control your movement all the way through the routine from beginning to end will help your concentration. And flowing movement is more fun than static poses.
Remember that it’s much more about what’s going on inside your torso than it is about the arms and legs — your limbs are driven by your core, not the other way ’round.

    Have fun!
